Abstract

Background and purpose:

The Carpathian endemic region was object of many research connected with thyroid diseases, especially with thyroid cancer. The aim of research was mortality because of the thyroid cancer in Podkarpacie region in the years 1986-2002.

‘Material and methods:

The object of analysis was: the absolute number deaths, crude rate, age-standardised rate and percentage.

Results:

In the years 1986-2003 the number of deaths caused by thyroid cancer diagnosed among females and males of Podkarpacie region was 307. In this same time in Poland was 4730 deaths caused by this neoplasm — 1258 in men and 3472 in woman. The crude rate of deaths for men in Podkarpacie decreased
from 0,55 in 1986 to 0,2 in 2003 and for women from 1,14 10 0,8.

Conclusion:

From 1986 to 2003 in Podkarpacie region was registered 6,49 % of the general number of thyroid cancer deaths in Poland. The highest rates of deaths registered in Podkarpacie after 1986 was lower than registered in 1979-1980 but there was higher than in Poland. The rate deaths woman/men was 3:1 in Podkarpacie and 2,76:1 in Poland
