Abstract

School children are spending most of their day studying, working on mentally challenging activities, which means that they are indoors most of their time. That is why they should spend their free time focusing on physical activities, which help them to maintain a balance between the mental and physical efforts. To find-out what kinds of out of school activities the young people from OHP practice, I conducted a survey in OSiW nr 4 at Trzebinia in MWK OHP. The group of young people was selected under certain conditions. The study group consisted of 130 students, age 15, with learning disabilities (6 th grade only) from socially and financially challenged families. The survey which was based on the questionnaires prepared by the authors of the article, followed our preresearch conducted at the same facility. The questionnaires were also verified by the tutors and nurses, who were taking care of the kids. The results of our survey showed a lack of intrest and participation in the field of physical activities. Sport was not popular. Young people spent their free-time meeting their friends, watching TV or listening to the radio. The only physical activities that were popular were team sports, bicycle riding, and roller-skating. Apart from that, some boys were going to the gymnasium and some girls were joining aerobics classes. Most of the young people spent only one hour per week on physical activities. Although, my survey found, that most of them believe that sport is good for their health.
