Abstract

Degenerative changes and pain in the joints are a common cause of health problems of the elderly. Osteoarthritis can affect any joint, but the most common cause of disability is degenerative arthritis of the vertebral column, hip and knee joints. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of limitations on motion and pain of peripheral joints in postmenopausal women who practiced sport and those who were inactive. The study involved a total of 117 women aged 50-60 years who are postmenopausal. The test group comprised 60 women who participated in general fitness exercise 2-3 times a week (at least 90 min per week), for at least 5 years. The control group consisted of 57 women who did not do any form of movement recreation and led the so-called “sedentary lifestyle”. The test and control groups were interviewed in terms of general health and lifestyle, Goniometric test of peripheral joint mobility and selected clinical tests were also carried out. On the basis of research in the test and control groups, it was found that regular physical activity in women after 50 helps to maintain larger ranges of motion and reduces the severity and incidence of pain in peripheral joints
