Self-assessment of professional preparation among female students of Obstetrics at Warsaw Medical University
Abstract
Introduction and aim of study: The aim of the study was to analyse the level of professional preparation assessed subjectively by female students of Obstetrics at Warsaw Medical University and to compare self-assessment ratings by students who have or have not commenced work in their chosen profession.
Material and methods: A group of 87 female students of the Master’s degree programme in Obstetrics completed an anonymous online questionnaire designed by the author. The questionnaire comprised 113 questions regarding selfassessment (graded on a scale from 1 to 5, where 5 = definitely agree), level of general career-related competences and competences specific to the obstetric profession. Statistical analysis was based on the Mann-Whitney U test, p<0.05.
Results: Most general competences and obstetrics-specific competences were self-assessed by the students as high (mode and median of 4). Differences in self-assessment of most competences between students with and without work experience as obstetricians in the study group were not statistically significant (p=NS).
Conclusions: 1. The sample of students of Obstetrics at Warsaw Medical University self-rated their professional competences as high. 2. Commencing work as obstetricians did not result in decreased subjective assessment of career preparation in the study group, which may indicate that a good level of career preparation was a fact rather than an opinion that the students held.
