The life quality of scrub nurses working in shifts
Abstract
Introduction: Work takes up the large part of one’s life. Job satisfaction affects the life quality. A scrub nurse is a qualified nurse/midwife who specializes in working in an operating suite. The nurses/midwives are exposed to stress and the occurrence of professional burnout as the result of shift work, night work, big responsibility and working in emergency, and other psychological and organizational factors. Aim: Comparing the quality of life of instrumenters was an aim of undertaken examinations working in the system one and two-shift, and evaluation of chosen qualities of life index. Material and methods: The research was conducted in December 2009. The research tool constituted the questionnaire of author’s own design consisting of 26 questions. The research group embraced 50 nurses/midwives working as the scrub nurses in the Fryderyk Chopin Voivodeship Specialist Hospital in Rzeszów. Results and Conclusions: The results show that the scrub nurses cope well with shift work in the system of 12-hour shifts. The results also prove that nurses/midwives are exposed to professional burnout. The 8-hour shift system affects more negatively the locomotor system in comparison to the 12-hour shift system. The most common cause of dissatisfaction in the workplace is the low remuneration.
