Abstract

Introduction: Instability of the hips in children with cerebral palsy is the very freuquent and difficult problem.

Patients and method: In our research we examined the influence of the surgical treatment on abilities of ‘walk and hip stability. We studied only children with multilevel soft tissue surgery. We have 34 children. We examined patients twice, first time before operating day, second time 9 months afier operation. We used Gross Motor Function Measure scale (GMFM — 88) to evaluate walking, and X ray of the hips to evaluate stability of the joints — Reimers index (RI).

Results: We observed improvement of walk in 19 patients, worsening in I case, and without change in 14 children. Reimers index improved in 45 hips ( 24 at right, 21 at left side) , worsening we observed in 3 cases (at left side).

Conclusions: In our opinion the multilevel soft tissue surgery have a good effect at children with CP, for their abilities to walk and for stability of the hips.
