Abstract

Iron is an essential element for oxygen transport, nucleic acids synthesis, cell growth and proliferation. The free iron called non-transferrin bound iron (NTBI) is toxic, it generates reactive oxygen species, causing damage of all biomolecules. Non-transferrin bound iron may play the central role in pathogenesis and progresion of haematological diseases and also in pathophysiology of central nervous system damages in newborns, neurodegenerative disorders and diabetes.
