Evaluation of osteoporosis fracture risk
Abstract
The intensity of process of demographic aging is increasing. Among others it is related to the increase in the average length of human life. One of the consequences of longevity are multiple morbidities of the elderly. Osteoporosis belongs to the group of such conditions. This disease poses a serious and multidimensional problem. Very often, the disease manifests itself at a late phase by fractures. Women are at particular risk of osteoporosis. The risk of osteoporotic fracture in the world population of women is estimated at the level between 30-50% and 13-30% in men. The risk of fracture related to reduced bone mass among 50 year old women is estimated at the level close to 39%. After 50, it increases to 54%. Fractures frequently lead to serious complications threatening health and life. Reduction of the fracture risk is possible and is based on the calculation of the individual risk rate that aims to determine the need for therapeutic intervention. Identification of patients with the highest risk of fracture is extremely important. The use of FRAX algorithm or other universal tool for accurate prediction of fracture risk, its reliable determination and assessment of a threshold for intervention should become a diagnostic standard.
